How do I setup Web2Pop? |
|
Web2Pop
does not need to be setuped. It uses information
from the account in your e-mail client. You must
setup your account in your e-mail client using
informations bellow (as strange it may look like):
- "localhost"
as incoming server name (without quotation marks).
- Your
full e-mail address as login name (i.e. me@service.com).
- Your
webmail password as password.
In
example, your have an account like rdupont@yahoo.com;
you must use "localhost" as server name
and "rdupont@yahoo.com" as account name
(without quotation marks for both fields).
You may find here
the same example using Eudora and here
using Outlook Express. Once created, your account
should looks like this
in Eudora (or this
is your main account) or this
in Outlook Express.

Special note for Netscape & Pegasus users. |
|
Some
e-mail client (i.e. Netscape Messenger or Pegasus
mail) does not allow the use of the @ character in
login name. In this case, replace the @ character
with a #. In above example your login name becomes
me#service.com.

Which SMTP server (outgoing mail) must I use? |
|
You
cannot send mail using the actual version of
Web2Pop. Therefore, you can use your usual SMTP
server (your Internet provider's one).

|
How does it work? |
|
When
checking mail, your e-mail client first connect to
Web2Pop; that's why we use web2pop (registered as
127.0.0.1) as POP3 server name.
Then, your e-mail client issues a USER command, sending
your login name. Here Web2Pop receives your e-mail
address and extracts its domain name. The domain name
is then used to find out which module of support to
load. On the PASS command, Web2Pop logs into your
account as you login using the web interface. Furthermore,
depending the requests your e-mail client issues,
Web2Pop downloads the correct HTTP page and extracts
all the necessary information to recompose your messages

Another program is already listening on port 110! |
|
You
may already have a POP3 server or an anti-spam filter
software. Here is the procedure to let them work together.
- Temporally
disable the POP3 server or anti-spam in order to
have Web2Pop launch properly.
-
Change Web2Pop listenning port from Web2Pop options
tab (i.e. 8110). Then click the "hide"
button.
-
You can now re-enable your POP3 server or anti-spam
software.
- Change
the setup of your Web2Pop account in order to use
the new Web2Pop port.
This can be done from the advanced tab for Outlook.
For Eudora, you'll have to edit the eudora.ini file
then add 'PopPort=8110' (from our example) just
bellow each line where you can read 'PopServer=localhost'.

My e-mail client cannot connect to server. |
|
From
your e-mail client's point of view, the server is
Web2Pop! If it cannot connect, this means it does
not find Web2Pop.
If
you have had a message from Web2Pop telling another
program already listen on port 110, then see the prior
question.
If you have had an error talking about library, have
a lok at the next question.
First
check Web2Pop is launched. You must see its icon in
the system tray. If not, launch it then, in the options
tab, check "start Web2Pop when windows starts".
Some
programs are locking the "hosts." file preventing
Web2Pop to register itself. In such case, you can
use "localhost" or "127.0.0.1"
instead of "web2pop" as incoming server.
Some special installation of WinNT or Win2000 can
also prevent Web2Pop registering itself.

|
Web2Pop tells "-ERR No support library found or library
not capable" when connecting. |
|
Web2Pop
has not found a module capable to handle your account
(or the found library is not a Web2Pop module).
You should check you have downloaded and installed
the requested module in the Web2Pop installation folder.
See the modules
page.

My e-mail client asks me for password again and again. |
|
Web2Pop
tries to connect to the remote service when it receives
the password from the e-mail client (the same as when
when you log on using the Web interface and fill the
login box). At this point, if a problem occurs loging
in, it retruns an error to your email client that
assumes the password was wrong.
The
problem in this case is that Web2Pop cannot connect
or log into the remote service. The service can be
offline for maintenance or overloaded or the service
may have change.
You should alway have a look with your web browser
first to check you have access to service, then
check the add-ins
page to see you have the latest module of support.
